What went we out in this wilderness to find?

We’ve been waiting for this trailer ever since the buzz reached a fever pitch at this year’s Sundance film festival. The Witch was quickly picked up by powerhouse distributor/production company A24 – with the festivities finally culminating in the director, newcomer Robert Eggers, winning the best Director award for this painstakingly recreated, period horror film.

If anything the trailer sells the absolute attention to detail, almost frighteningly so. The ruggedness of the landscape and the God given mission to tame it, turn it, civilize it. Yet sometimes nature itself has other plans and in its darkened hollows, darkened words are bred, whispered in the shade of the wood. We’ve already been treated to several terrific horror films this past year, running the gamut of every sub-genre and psychological ailment, but The Witch looks to continue the quality of the trend with something truly unique. Something to be witnessed- a folktale to be passed down.

The Witch will be released in theaters in 2016, joining A24‘s slate alongside the recently acquired Green Room – from director Jeremy Saulnier (Blue Ruin). If it’s anything like their 2015 lineup, it’s time to start getting excited.
