Adam Wingard’s name has become synonymous with the independent horror scene over the past few years with films 2011’s You’re Next and 2010’s A Horrible Way to Die. His most recent film, The Guest garnered him acclaim in 2014. And things are only getting better for Wingard. His most recent efforts this year have only pushed his reputation in the horror genre further with the premier of Cinemax’s new show Outcast. Adapted from the comic book from Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman and artists Paul Azaceta.
In addition to Outcast, Wingard has been working on a feature length horror filmed entitled, The Woods. The only thing known about this film is a teaser released in March, in which, critics from such websites as Blood Disgusting, Time Out New York, and JoBlo tout this film as the scariest film ever made.
This week, during the 2016 San Diego Comic Con, Wingard brought the full trailer to the movie and shocked the convention with the realization that The Woods is in fact a sequel to The Blair Witch Project entitled Blair Witch. The realization and excitement has swept through the fans and the internet with reactions boarding on summer superhero “holly s**t!” levels. What makes it even more special is the fact that the original directors were there to help promote and pass the torch to Wingard.
The cast includes Alien: Covenant’s Callie Hernandez, Snitch’s James Allen McCune, and Wreck-It-Ralph’s Brandon Scott. The film will be released in theatres September 16 2016. And for the first time, in a long time, audiences will be going into the movie knowing only that the story centres around a group of friends on a camping trip that discover that they aren’t alone in the woods. No other word has been given about the plot.
The Blair Witch was one of the most talked about and terrifying movies of 1999. The anticipation to see if Adam Wingard’s Blair Witch can live up to that reputation will be every bit as nerve wracking as it was stepping into that theatre back in 1999.
