The challenge space mirrors the show’s eerie setting, complete with towering bunk beds, a twisted staircase, and mysterious masked guards, as 456 competitors vie for supremacy.

The nine-episode series unfolds with participants tackling familiar challenges like the dalgona challenge, the glass bridge, and the intense game of “Red Light, Green Light.” The grand prize, an unprecedented $4.56 million, sets a record in reality television and game show history.

However, the show faced controversy over filming conditions during the first challenge, “Red Light, Green Light.” Anonymous sources claimed “inhumane” conditions due to the cold weather, with some contestants collapsing during the seven-hour competition. The production setup lasting eight hours before the game exacerbated the challenges.

Responding to these claims, Netflix and the producers emphasized the care taken for the cast and crew’s health, including safety precautions and aftercare for contestants. An independent adjudicator oversees each game to ensure fairness.

ET’s Ash Crossan, present on The Challenge set, spoke with contestants who contested the allegations of inhumanity. Most participants acknowledged the anticipated difficulty of the competition, emphasizing the $4.56 million prize and the understanding that it wouldn’t be an easy endeavor.

Despite the cold and challenging conditions, contestants expressed pride in their achievements and dismissed the idea that the show was unfairly demanding. They highlighted the rigorous health assessments conducted before the competition, emphasizing personal responsibility in joining such a high-stakes endeavor.

As the second batch of episodes dropped on Nov. 29, additional players echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the anticipated challenges and the conscious choice to participate in a demanding competition for a substantial reward.
