Anne Hathaway Cinematic: In an alternate cinematic universe, Anne Hathaway was poised to embody the infamous Black Cat in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4a film that, unfortunately, met its demise in the early stages of development.
Reflecting on this unrealized opportunity, Hathaway shared on The Happy Sad Confused Podcast, “If [Spider-Man 4] had gotten made, I dont know if I wouldve been considered for The Dark Knight Rises. Perhaps [Christopher Nolan] wouldve said, ‘No, shes occupied in another universe.'”
The talented actor had been cast as Felicia Hardy, also known as Black Cat, a character with a complex dynamic in the comics, involving a mix of villainy and an unexpected connection with Spider-Man. Black Cat, having overcome a traumatic incident, hones her combat skills and agility while possessing intriguing probability fields that induce misfortune for her adversaries.
However, with the demise of Spider-Man 4, Hathaway pivoted to another iconic roleCatwoman in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. The intricate dance between Spider-Man and Black Cat on the big screen eventually unfolded in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, with Felicity Jones assuming the role.
Raimi, in 2013, expressed his enthusiasm for Hathaway’s potential portrayal, stating, “I didnt get to see Batman yet, because Ive been working nonstop
but I hear shes great in it. Im not surprised, because I loved what she was doing with the auditions for Spider-Man 4.”
Spider-Man 4 faced cancellation following mixed reviews of Spider-Man 3, with Raimi’s own dissatisfaction influencing the decision. Subsequently, Sony opted for a reboot, casting Andrew Garfield as a distinct Peter Parker. The franchise eventually found its way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Spider-Man: Homecoming, culminating in the multiverse spectacle of Spider-Man: No Way Home.
