Axel Foley Grand Return: Eddie Murphy Revives Beverly Hills Cop on Netflix

Axel Foley Grand Return: Eddie Murphy is making a triumphant return as the iconic Axel Foley in the highly anticipated Beverly Hills Cop installment, set to hit Netflix in the coming year.

In a teaser image shared by the streaming giant, titled Beverly Hills Cop Axel Foley, Murphy is donned in his character’s unmistakable Detroit Lions jacket, surrounded by an air of suspense with his hands raised as if encircled by law enforcement.

“He’s back. Axel Foley returns in 2024!” announced Netflix on X, formerly Twitter.

While an official release date is yet to be unveiled, fans can anticipate the reunion of the original Beverly Hills Cop cast, including Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Paul Reiser, and Bronson Pinchot. The fourth edition of the franchise will also feature Kevin Bacon, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Taylour Paige.

The plot will center around Foley’s daughter, portrayed by Paige, drawing him into a case based in California. However, his involvement quickly sparks challenges for a special units officer from the LAPD, played by Bacon.

Reflecting on filming Beverly Hills Cop 4 in his 60s, Murphy acknowledged the contrast with shooting the original in his 20s. “It was a hard one. I did Axel Foley when I was in my 20s. I am not in my 20s anymore,” he shared in a recent interview with People. “It was an action movie. So it was a rough one. But we got through it.”

Axel Foley Grand Return (2)

The inaugural Beverly Hills Cop, released in 1984, follows the journey of Axel Foley, a young detective from the Detroit Police Department played by Murphy, who travels to Beverly Hills to investigate his best friend’s murder. The film, nominated for a Golden Globe, propelled Murphy to superstardom, emerging as the highest-grossing movie in the U.S. for that year.

Subsequent sequels, Beverly Hills Cop II in 1987 and Beverly Hills Cop III in 1994, continued the franchise’s success. Despite longstanding discussions about a fourth film, significant progress was achieved with the involvement of original producer Jerry Bruckheimer, bringing the vision for Beverly Hills Cop back to life.

Murphy emphasized, “When he got involved and he started developing the script, and he knew what Beverly Hills Cop is supposed to be, when he got back involved, that’s when it all started to come together.” After years of attempts, the right script finally emerged, setting the stage for the highly anticipated return of Axel Foley.
