Initially, Cooper considered forgoing the prosthetic, stating, “I thought, ‘Maybe we don’t need to do it because we can take time off [preparations for the film].’ But it’s all about balance, and, you know, my lips are nothing like Lenny’s, and my chin. And so we had that, and it just didn’t look right.”
Addressing concerns raised by some regarding the portrayal, Bernstein’s children, Jamie, Alexander, and Nina, released a statement in August expressing their support for Cooper’s artistic choices. They affirmed that their father had a distinctive nose, and Cooper’s use of makeup to enhance the resemblance was acceptable to them.
While speaking with King, Cooper emotionally recalled a phone conversation with Alex Bernstein, one of Leonard Bernstein’s children. “I couldn’t believe it, but this huge emotional exhalation came out, and I just was crying so hard, I couldn’t even thank him,” Cooper said. “And he started crying. It was an incredible moment. Sometimes you don’t even know what’s going on, you know. I couldn’t believe that gesture. It was very moving to me.”
The Anti-Defamation League also weighed in on the matter, stating that it did not view Cooper’s use of prosthetics as antisemitic, recognizing the film as a biopic on Leonard Bernstein rather than perpetuating harmful stereotypes.
Cooper’s “Maestro” is set to premiere on Netflix on December 20th.
