Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes: A Galactic Quest Unveils the Future

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes: Wes Ball, known for his work on The Maze Runner trilogy, ventures into the realm of primates with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Departing from the darker tone of the previous films in The Planet of the Apes reboot franchise, Ball is infusing a lighter approach into the fourth installment, drawing a comparison to the tone of Star Wars.

“When I first started on it, I said, ‘I feel like Apes needs a little bit of Star Wars’,” Ball shared with Empire Magazine. “It’s all still very grounded in reality, but it is essentially a quest narrative. Our main character — the young, impressionable Noa [Owen Teague] — meets characters along the way and becomes awakened as he winds up in a place that will test him, and he ultimately becomes his true self.”

Empire Online unveiled a new image from Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, showcasing Owen Teague as Noa, the franchise’s fresh protagonist.

Teague assumes the lead in Kingdom as Noa, a young chimpanzee living generations after Caesar (Andy Serkis) led the apes. The ensemble cast includes Freya Allan, Kevin Duran, Peter Macon, and William H. Macy.

“Director Wes Ball breathes new life into the global, epic franchise set several generations in the future following Caesar’s reign, in which apes are the dominant species living harmoniously and humans have been reduced to living in the shadows,” reads the official synopsis. “As a new tyrannical ape leader builds his empire, one young ape undertakes a harrowing journey that will cause him to question all that he has known about the past and to make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike.”

Directed by Wes Ball, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes features a screenplay by Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, and Patrick Aison. Serving as a sequel to 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes, the film is produced by Ball, Jaffa, Silver, Joe Hartwick Jr., and Jason Reed.

Expect Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes to hit theaters on May 24, 2024, courtesy of 20th Century Studios.
