Disney and Apple’s Thanksgiving Box Office Woes: A Critical Look at ‘Wish’ and ‘Napoleon

Disney and Apple’s Thanksgiving: Over the Thanksgiving holiday, both Disney and Apple faced lackluster performances at the box office, adding to the challenges that Hollywood has been grappling with in recent weeks.

Despite earlier successes like Barbie and Oppenheimer during the summer, theatrical releases have consistently struggled to reach pre-pandemic levels. The media industry, in general, has faced setbacks, including the extended SAG-AFTRA strike and a growing criticism of content deemed “woke” or pandering.

Disney’s “Wish,” with a whopping budget of $200 million, managed to bring in $8.3 million on Wednesday, projecting around $37 million over the five-day period. Similarly, Apple Original Productions’ “Napoleon,” also carrying a hefty $200 million production cost, earned $7.7 million on Wednesday, with an anticipated total of around $30 million over the five days.

Critically, “Napoleon” holds a modest 62% favorability rating on Rotten Tomatoes, along with 61% from the general audience. Meanwhile, “Wish” has faced scrutiny for its concept.

Daily Wire’s Ben Shapiro criticized the film, interpreting its central idea as a metaphor for portraying God as “bad” until an “empowered female character” intervenes to save the day.

“The plot is essentially about how God is bad. So, what it is, is a king who grants people’s wishes, but he has an apprentice… and this apprentice finds out that the king is only selectively granting people’s wishes, and is picking and choosing,” Shapiro explained, sarcastically adding, “This is a terrible, terrible thing — she will grant everyone’s wishes! Which, you don’t have to go far afield to understand what that kind of is, ‘God is bad because he said no to you sometimes.’ So it would be better if there were an empowered female character to get up and make sure that all wishes be granted across the board.”

In October, The Daily Wire announced its own live-action adaptation of the Brothers Grimm fairytale “Snow White,” while Disney has faced challenges with its own “Snow White” adaptation starring Rachel Zegler, who has publicly criticized the classic story. The Daily Wire’s film, featuring actress and YouTube superstar host Brett Cooper, is scheduled for release in 2024, while Disney has had to postpone its adaptation for another year.
